Alberto Cano
Alberto Cano joined Virginia Tech and ARC as associate vice president for research computing in November 2024. Cano provides university-wide leadership for research computing and oversees ARC's strategic and operational initiatives. His priorities include building user engagement to ensure faculty and students have access to cutting-edge computing resources and services that drive their research and advance scientific discovery.
Cano previously served as faculty director of high performance research computing at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he secured $2.4 million in equipment grants to reorganize VCU's compute clusters, deployed AI services for integration in research and administration, and focused on broadening the user base for high-performance computing resources to include more non-traditional users.
Cano earned his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Granada, Spain, and also holds a master's degree in intelligent systems from the University of Cordoba, a master's degree in soft computing and intelligent systems from the University of Granada, and a double bachelor's degree in computer science and computer engineering from the University of Cordoba.
